Team Web Development

As we move into week 3 of the Coder Camps ASP.NET MVC program, we're starting to put all the pieces of the stack together and begin work on our group project. The initial scope of our project was to build the admin area of the Fund.io website. Now, we have been asked to help finish testing and debugging the entire application, in addition to the admin area.

We'll be working as a collaborative development team on this project using Team Foundation Server (TFS). Some of the benefits of TFS are source control, data collection, reporting, and project tracking. The farther I get into this technology, the more impressed I am with Microsoft's suite of development tools. While I've been a long-time user of Windows and Office (and a big fan of their Flight Simulator!), until now I never really saw the amazing things they've been cooking up for software developers over the years.

  1. Gray, my name is Jason Cannon and I will be attending Coder Camps next march. I have been following your adventures on this blog and wanted to ask you what your opinion has been on the camp so far. Has it been worth it so far, and do you think it will adequately prepare for you a career in software development?

  2. Hi Jason,

Thanks for stopping by. Things are going well here. I certainly had my concerns in the beginning... Mainly, whether or not I would be able to keep up the pace of learning such a complex set of subjects in nine weeks. It has been tough, for sure. It didn't take me long to realize that I'd have to put in extra time studying for me to keep up. Fortunately, everyone here has been very helpful, and along with the hard work, I'm starting to feel like it's going to work.

So to answer your question, yes, I think it will adequately prepare you. But, as with anything, that comes with a big caveat: It is what you make it. The camp provides the tools, resources, and environment for making it happen. However, the most important factor, I feel, is our own motivation and the effort we put in. Good input, good output, right?

The only other thing I would say is, I wish that I would have had more C# fundamentals before I came to camp. Going over some videos, or an ebook on the subject before you get here would be time well spent, and will give you a big advantage going into camp. Hope this helps, and good luck!
